BACK BAY — A public information meeting about the effort to restore marsh and seagrass in Back Bay, creating habitat and potentially helping to address the unique flooding challenges of the southern city, is scheduled for Thursday, July 13.
The meeting is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at the Senior Resource Center, Inc., 912 Princess Anne Road, and it will include a short presentation and opportunities to ask questions of officials.
“This project is a direct result of the focus groups we had at the SRC the summer of 2019 brainstorming possible ways to address the flooding in Back Bay,” City Councilmember Barbara Henley of District 2 wrote via email.
The project area is in Bonney Cove, within the 560-acre area that historically has had marsh cover, according to a 2022 report. As much as 58 acres of marsh terraces would be built across the cove “to restore valuable habitat that historically provided environmental and flood risk reduction benefits to Virginia Beach’s Southern Rivers Watershed.”
