Political Notebook: The Indy’s full Virginia Beach voter guide is online, some endorsements

VIRGINIA BEACH — The Princess Anne Independent News 2022 Virginia Beach Voter Guide is available in full online at this link.

This year’s guide includes Q&As with all candidates seeking City Council and School Board seats in Virginia Beach under the 10-district local voting system.

As of this writing, some remaining print copies of the Sunday, Sept. 4, print edition containing the full guide may be found on some of The Independent News’ secondary racks. 

Cost to read the guide is $1 billion. 

Just kidding.

It is free online because newspapers are bad at business.


Virginia Beach Police Benevolent Association Local 34 endorsed challenger Jen Kiggans in the Virginia 2nd Congressional District race and the following candidates for Virginia Beach City Council: Rocky Holcomb in the District 1 special election, Barbara Henley in District 2, Dr. Amelia Ross-Hammond in District 4, Linwood Branch in District 6, John Andrews in District 8, Joash Schulman in District 9 and Heidi Daniels in District 10.


The Virginia Beach Education Association Political Action Committee of Educators (VBEA PACE) endorsed candidates in City Council and School Board elections in Virginia Beach.

For City Council, it endorsed Rocky Holcomb in the special election in District 1, Michael Mauch in District 2, Dr. Amelia Ross-Hammond in District 4, Worth Remick in District 6, John Andrews in District 8, Joash Schulman in District 9 and Jennifer Rouse in District 10. 

For School Board, it endorsed Kim Melnyk in District 2, Staci Martin in District 4, Sharon Felton in District 6, Carolyn Rye in District 8, Erika Guess in District 9 and Kim Bentley in District 10.

“It’s important that the elected leaders of our School Board and City Council develop and support policies that benefit public education for all our students and stakeholders in our community,” Kathleen Slinde, the association’s president, said in a statement released on Wednesday, Aug. 31.


The Virginia Beach Democratic Committee released a list of recommended candidates, including incumbent U.S. Rep. Elaine Luria in Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District and some candidates for nonpartisan local offices. 

For City Council, the committee recommends Melissa Peck in the District 1 special election, Dr. Amelia Ross Hammond in District 4, Worth Remick in District 6, Joash Schulman in District 9 and Jennifer Rouse in District 10. 

For School Board, the committee recommends Kim Melnyk in District 2, Staci Martin in District 4, Sharon Felton in District 6, Carolyn Rye in District 8, Erika Guess in District 9 and Kim Bentley in District 10.
