VIRGINIA BEACH — Among the many people who traveled to Red Wing Park in Virginia Beach to enjoy the cherry blossoms in bloom were A.J. Khanna and Tamira Pillay, who brought their 9-week-old baby, Vara, along in the stroller.

It was their first time visiting the long lines of cherry trees along a scenic path in the park, which was home to the recent Cherry Blossom Festival, a celebration of the Virginia Beach’s Sister City relationship with Miyazaki, Japan.

The trees were a gift from Miyazaki in 2005, according to the city of Virginia Beach.

Marco and Janyss Ramirez of Norfolk brought their children, Janyn, 5, and Janelle, 1, to the park in Virginia Beach.

Marco Ramirez said the family normally travels to Washington, D.C., to enjoy the cherry blossoms.

“We were going to go D.C., but it’s too far,” Marco Ramirez said.

Janyss Ramirez wants to pass the tradition along to her daughters.

“It’s once a year to see the blossoms, and it’s wonderful,” she said.
