COURTHOUSE — The city is planning celebrations, and the details are expected to be released soon.

“Starting next year, it’s going to be our 60th anniversary as a city,” Vice Mayor Rosemary Wilson said during a meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 7, at City Hall.

“I’m not sure what kind of plans that we have for that, but I think we need to be thinking about that,” she said. “That’s a really big milestone for us, and we should be doing some special things to recognize 60 years.”

She turned the floor over to City Manager Patrick Duhaney, who said the staff would provide the council with information on a proposed approach to the anniversary.

In 1962, the independent city of Virginia Beach and Princess Anne County agreed to merge, and the union became official on Jan. 1, 1963.
