BLACKWATER — You-pick pecans are now available through the Market at Land of Promise Farms, which began selling fresh pork earlier this year.

The pecan orchard was here when Diane Horsley’s parents bought Land of Promise in 1959, and today there are trees on either side of her house, with the larger, fenced orchard behind it.

“My parents used to sell to only grocery stores,” said Horsley, who, in addition to farming with her husband and children, serves as the chairperson of the Virginia Beach Agricultural Advisory Commission.

Horsley said one of her main childhood chores was picking up pecans. When you-pick operations grew in popularity years ago, the orchard seemed like a natural fit. It was a hit, and Horsley recently said customers from Suffolk, Richmond and even further have visited.

People who want to pick – or, as may be, pick up – can do so by appointment by calling (757) 421-3625.

Additionally, pecan picking in the orchard is also available from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Saturday mornings in November. Call or text (757) 439-5048 for information about the market. Information about the market also is on Facebook via @themarketatlopf.
