BLACKWATER — A man died on Sunday, July 19, during a nighttime crash between a car and the bicycle the man was riding on Blackwater Road.

Police identified the man killed in the crash as Rickey E. Lewis, 60, of Virginia Beach.

First responders were called to the 4800 block of Blackwater Road at 8:47 p.m. for a collision between a bicyclist and an automobile, according to a statement released by Master Police Officer A.L. Perry, a department spokesperson.

Lewis, who was on the bicycle, was traveling south on Blackwater Road when he was struck by a 2005 Toyota Camry also headed south. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical services personnel, according to Perry’s statement. Neither the Camry’s driver nor a passenger in the car were injured.

The matter was investigated by the Virginia Beach Police Fatal Crash Team.

No charges will be filed because the bicycle involved in the nighttime incident lacked lighting and reflectors, said Master Police Officer Linda Kuehn, a department spokesperson, on Thursday, July 23.

“It was pretty much impossible for the driver to see him,” she said.

Megan Reaves, a family friend, has established an online fund to help Lewis’ family cover the cost of a funeral and memorial service. Click this link to learn more about it or to contribute.
