THE INDEPENDENT NEWS
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3, but much of the voting this year is happening before then.
A great deal of information about voting is available at the website of the Virginia Beach Department of Voter Registration via vbgov.com/voter and the Virginia Department of Elections Citizen Portal via vote.elections.virginia.gov/VoterInformation.
Some information about the election from those two sources follows.
• In person early voting for this election is already underway at the Virginia Beach Voter Registration & Elections office in Building 14 at the Virginia Beach Municipal Center, 2449 Princess Anne Road, and it ends on Saturday, Oct. 31. The hours at this location are as follows: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays; 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursdays; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays. The Voter Registration and Elections office at the municipal center serves as a ballot drop-off location during hours of voting.
• In person early voting begins at four satellite locations on Monday, Oct. 19, and ends on Saturday, Oct. 31. The locations are Bayside Recreation Center, 4500 First Court Road; Great Neck Recreation Center, 2521 Shorehaven Drive; Seatack Recreation Center, 141 S. Birdneck Road; and Kempsville Treasurer’s Office, 5340 Fairfield Shopping Center.
• Voted ballots that are marked and sealed that a voter wants to drop off must be returned to their polling place or to the Virginia Beach Voter Registration & Elections office by 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 3. Absentee ballots returned by mail must be postmarked by Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3, and received by the local registrar’s office by noon, Friday, Nov. 6, according to the state.
• Per the Virginia Department of Elections, voters in Virginia do not need a reason to vote absentee meaning early, either by a mail ballot or in person. Additionally, voters do not have to fill out an application to vote in person. The state says voters can go to the registrar’s office or satellite location, show their identification and cast their ballot. Information about acceptable identification can be found online via elections.virginia.gov/voterID.
• The state urges voters who want to vote by mail to request their ballot and return it as soon as possible because there is a high volume of mail-in votes expected. In Virginia Beach, the initial mailing of vote by mail ballots was 45,000.
• People can check their registration, register to vote, find their polling place or apply to vote absentee by mail online at the Virginia Department of Elections Citizen Portal via vote.elections.virginia.gov/VoterInformation.
