PUNGO – The driver of an SUV died following a two-vehicle crash this afternoon on the 2400 block of Indian River Road, according to Virginia Beach police.
Another woman, a passenger in the SUV, was critically injured after a delivery truck driver heading east lost control, overcorrected and crossed the line on the two-lane road and struck the SUV in the westbound lane, according to a statement released by Master Police Officer Patrick Kane.
The delivery truck driver, who suffered minor injuries, was taken into custody and to the city jail, though police did not say what charge the delivery truck driver faced.
The matter remained under investigation by the city police fatal crash team, and a section of the road remained closed this evening. Kane wrote that alcohol and speed could have been factors in the crash.
According to Kane, emergency officials got a call regarding the collision at 3:19 p.m. Indian River Road was closed between Princess Anne Road and West Neck Road.
The passenger in the SUV was taken to a local hospital, where she remained in critical condition, Kane wrote in the statement.
