VIRGINIA BEACH — The body of a 27-year-old man who went missing while kayaking near Lynnhaven Inlet on Tuesday, Sept. 13, was recovered at Sandbridge on Friday, Sept. 16, police said.
In Sandbridge, an off-duty police officer located a body in the water near the 3100 block of Sandfiddler Road, according to a statement released by city police four days after the discovery.
Rescue personnel recovered the body and transported it to the medical examiner’s office, according to the statement released by Virginia Beach police. On Tuesday, Sept. 20, the medical examiner identified the man as Ryan Tew.
The U.S. Coast Guard reported receiving a notification at 10 a.m., Sept. 13, that Tew had left Crab Creek in a single-person kayak the previous night but not returned. The kayak was located about four miles east of 65th Street in Virginia Beach on Tuesday, Sept. 13.
The search was suspended on Wednesday, Sept. 14, after the Coast Guard and partner agencies searched more than 1,873 square miles over two days.
Tew was raised in Suffolk, was active in sports and the outdoors and close to his family, according to an obituary.
