VIRGINIA BEACH — Anissa Bowden, a retired teacher, stopped actively campaigning earlier this month in a School Board special election, but she says she has resumed her campaign.
Bowden is a candidate for the District 4 seat to complete a term begun by former Board Member Staci Martin. Board Member Shannon Kendrick, a temporary appointee to the seat, and Dr. Alveta Green, a former administrator and educator, are also running.
“I am ending the day-to-day functions of my campaign to focus on my life’s work — advocacy for educators, staff and students,” Bowden wrote in a Wednesday, Sept. 11, social media post.
She said her decision to pause her campaign came after the loss of a loved one. “I haven’t been campaigning,” she said Friday, Sept. 13. “I’ve just been putting information on social media. I’m going to let the chips fall where they may.” However, shortly before this edition of The Independent News went to press, she said she is back.
Green declined to comment. In June, Green defeated Bowden in a caucus to earn the endorsement of city Democrats. Bowden vowed to stay in the race as an independent.
Speaking before Bowden resumed actively campaigning, Kendrick said Bowden had the right to run and shouldn’t feel pressured to leave the race.
