THE INDEPENDENT NEWS
BACK BAY — The Independent News will consider applications from college students for a summer news reporting internship, which will last, approximately, from May to September 2021.
Internships are unpaid aside from reporting expenses and mileage. They must be for course credit. All applicants must have a faculty recommendation and demonstrate writing experience, such as for a student publication, by including three to five clips. Applications without a faculty recommendation will not be considered.
The internship is open to students from local colleges or universities or who live in the area and will be home for the summer. There will be opportunities to cover city meetings, issues in rural communities and the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, and the 2021 Virginia elections. Safety precautions due to the novel coronavirus will be paramount.
Previous college reporting interns for The Independent News have gone on to careers in journalism, including at publications such as The Virginian-Pilot. Applicants should review and understand the newspaper’s ethics policy, which is available at this link.
Letters of interest, clips (either via links or PDF tear sheets) and a faculty recommendation are due via email on Thursday, April 1. Email editor John Doucette via jhd@princessanneindy.com for more information.
