VIRGINIA BEACH — Former Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms today will announce his endorsement of Mayor Bobby Dyer, who is seeking reelection and his first full term in the office, according to Dyer’s campaign.

The endorsement is scheduled to be announced during a press conference at the Oceanfront this morning. During an interview, Dyer said he is humbled and honored by the endorsement from Sessoms.

Sessoms’ resignation in 2018 midway through his third term led to Dyer, then a longtime Centerville representative on the City Council, winning a special election to succeed him.

“Virginia Beach does have a proud legacy of not only being a livable city, but of being one of the best managed cities in the country,” Dyer said.

He added that he wants to continue to build on the legacy of “a great city and to take it to the next level of community, unity and prosperity in challenging times.”

Dyer faces challengers Jody Wagner and Richard “R.K.” Kowalewitch, who last ran for mayor in 2016, when Sessoms defeated Kowalewitch and two other challengers.

In 2009, Sessoms supported Wagner in her ultimately unsuccessful run for lieutenant governor, according to reporting by The Virginian-Pilot’s Bill Sizemore.
