COURTHOUSE – An inmate died in the Virginia Beach Correctional Center on Sunday, Sept. 25, according to the sheriff’s office.
The inmate was identified as Francis Phillip Charrette, 57. He was booked on Sept. 21 on a traffic offense and a felony drug possession charge. He was placed in detoxification housing, according to a press statement released by Kathy Hieatt, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, via email on Wednesday, Sept. 28.
She wrote that authorities delayed releasing information because they could not locate next of kin and did not want to panic friends and family of other inmates.
Deputies on Sunday noticed activity in the detoxification unit at 12:15 a.m. Charette was discovered unresponsive. CPR was administered and emergency responders called, but the inmate was pronounced dead at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital.
Members of the public who may have known Charrette or how to contact his family are asked to call (757) 385-4101. The death is under investigation, but no foul play is suspected, according to the statement.
