COURTHOUSE — The City Council on Tuesday, May 17, signed a resolution remembering the people lost during the mass shooting at the municipal center three years ago, and the council also proclaimed this coming anniversary as “Love for VB Dedication Day.”
Mayor Bobby Dyer read the resolution during the meeting at City Hall, and he named each of the 12 people who died in the Friday, May 31, 2019, tragedy. Four people also were wounded. The gunman, a city employee, also died that day.
“We will forever remember the 12 lives lost so suddenly three years ago, and we continue to pray for all those who were traumatized by this brutal act of violence and seek healing,” Dyer read.
Dyer said the community continues to seek to honor those lost through kindness and service, and the City Council urged citizens to honor the victims through volunteer work. Flags of the city are at half-staff between Friday, May 27, through Tuesday, May 31, this year.
A three-year remembrance ceremony is scheduled to take place at Mount Trashmore at 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 31. There will be limited seating near the stage, and the city in a statement released this month urged guests to bring their own chairs.
