From the Editor: A central point for coverage of voting system changes in Virginia Beach

BY JOHN-HENRY DOUCETTE

I have been working to get some older stories online recently, and I realized it might be a good idea to gather our coverage of the voting system issues facing Virginia Beach into a central location.

So I did that.

There is now a permanent page with stories about issues we have covered frequently over the past several months including the Fowler bill that effectively challenged the local voting system here, the Holloway v. Virginia Beach federal lawsuit and issues related to filling the Kempsville seat — and, since this column originally appeared in print, also the Lynnhaven District seat.

These things are not the same, but they are related. This is a time of major change for how we will select leaders in our city.

In a perfect world, major local media outlets would provide more coverage of the issues related to the city voting system because the coming changes are substantial. WAVY-TV, especially, has made an effort to cover some of these issues, but there really has not been enough news coverage of this stuff.

So that will remain a focus for The Independent News for the time being.

The permanent page is online at this link. You can bookmark the link, which will be updated when new stories are published online, or find it under the new “Topics” tab at the main page of princessanneindy.com.

Given how quickly things have moved with the Kempsville seat, some of our coverage about the selection process only appeared online.
