CREEDS – The Virginia Beach 4-H Livestock Show and Sale was held at the Creeds Ruritan Community Complex on Thursday, May 31, and Friday, June 1, the culmination of months of hard work for young people who raise animals and learn to show them.
This year’s auction on Friday, June 1, raised more than $187,000 from sales of steers, hogs, lambs and goats – as well as country hams.
Dr. Scott Greiner, a professor and extension specialist from Virginia Tech, served as judge of the show.
“4-H and livestock programs are such a great learning tool for kids, and it’s great to be a small part of it,” Greiner said in an interview.
On the day of the show, Landin Spruill, 14, of Gibbs Woods, N.C., said he loves participating in the livestock club.
“I love the animals,” he said. “It’s a lot of fun, and I see a lot of my friends here.”
There’s another element to raising livestock.
“Responsibility,” Brian Spruill, Landin’s father, noted.
