THE INDEPENDENT NEWS

First Lady Pam Northam and top officials from Virginia and North Carolina will be among the featured speakers during a daylong symposium on building partnerships to protect the resources of the North Landing River and Albemarle Sound.

The 2018 North Landing River-Albemarle Sound Estuarine Symposium is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, April 19, at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, 1000 19th Street.

It is being held by the City of Virginia Beach with the Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Partnership, Virginia Institute of Marine Science and the Nature Conservancy.

A number of talks, panels and opportunities to collaborate between organizations are planned. Talks are geared toward people working toward preservation and on environmental issues, but Virginia Beach City Councilmember Barbara Henley, who represents the Princess Anne District, said people who care about the watersheds and natural resources of our area will find information and opportunities.

There will be panels about wetlands, forests, climate change and sea level rise, research and activities in the areas, and fish habitats, among other topics. Among the scheduled events:

  • A talk about the cultural history of the North Landing River and Albemarle Sound by historian Stephen Mansfield.
  • An overview of the Albemarle‐Pamlico Estuarine System by Bill Crowell, director of the Albemarle‐Pamlico National Estuary Partnership.
  • Speakers including Northam, as well as Virginia Natural Resources Secretary Matthew Strickler and North Carolina Environmental Quality Secretary Michael Regan.

Registration is $25, and a $3 processing fee may apply. Reach Chuck Payne via (757) 385-8594 for more information or email symposium@vbgov.com. Find more details or register at vbgov.com/buildingasharedvision.
