KNOTTS ISLAND, N.C. — To be clear to the uninitiated – the only gobblers shot during the recent turkey shoot here were printed on paper targets.
The charitable shoots are held in a field behind the rescue station by the Knotts Island Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, which helps support volunteer fire response on the island, isolated from the Currituck County mainland. The auxiliary also hosts a number of community events.
During the turkey shoot, for $5 per shot, participants compete to hit targets. Also, there are snacks and, appreciated amid some drizzle during the event this past month, hot cocoa.
They also can supply shotguns for those who may not have them.
“You don’t see too many turkey shoots anymore,” said Bobby Broadhurst, who owns a plaster and repair business.
He traveled to the island from Chesapeake for the event.
“Have gun, will travel,” he said. “I love to shoot.”
“It’s fun,” added John Reedy of Suffolk, who owns an audio video security business.
There is another reason to participate.
“To support the cause,” Broadhurst said.
Reedy said he was attending his first turkey shoot.
“He’s going to get hooked today,” Broadhurst predicted.
He’ll have a chance to come back and take aim while helping the Knotts Island community.
The next turkey shoot is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, April 21, behind the fire station at 327 Knotts Island Road.
