Media: Virginian-Pilot workshop an opportunity for local high school students interested in journalism

THE INDEPENDENT NEWS

The Virginian-Pilot is accepting applications for its 31st summer journalism workshop, an opportunity for local high school students to work with professionals in the region’s leading newsroom — and develop skills and stories.

The free workshop is from Wednesday, July 12, through Wednesday, July 19. Applications are due on Monday, April 24.

“Journalism is more important than ever, and we need people in the business who take it seriously,” said Denise Watson, a journalist at The Pilot and the workshop co-coordinator.

Watson, who participated in a similar program as a teen, said participants learn to develop story ideas, self-edit and use digital technology, such as using phones to shoot video.

Landstown High School senior Logan Reardon, 18, participated this past year.

“I definitely think it was time well spent,” Reardon said. “I got to meet a lot of people in the journalism field. It made me decide that I was going to do journalism.”

Reardon said there were opportunities to write, develop stories and conduct interviews.

“This is something you have to do because it’s going to give you the best experience you can have,” Reardon said.
