Several people were displaced this morning after a house fire on the 100 block of Wade Avenue in Knotts Island, N.C., but a fire department spokesperson from Virginia Beach credited working smoke detectors with helping four adults, two children and pets escape the flames and smoke.
Virginia Beach firefighters responded to the blaze at 7:17 a.m. to assist with Currituck County fire and rescue personnel, according to a statement released via email by Art Kohn, a spokesperson for the Virginia Beach Fire Department.
One Virginia Beach firefighter was taken to the hospital with an injury that was not life threatening, according to Kohn. The firefighter was expected to be okay.
The house was “heavily involved,” with flames and smoke coming through the roof, but the people and pets were outside the house when rescue officials arrived.
Responders set up a system to use water from a nearby dock to help fight the fire “due to the remote location,” Kohn wrote.
The fire was brought under control at 8:34 a.m., with crews still on scene and a fire investigator dispatched to help determine the cause of the fire.
Kohn wrote that the Red Cross had been notified to assist the people displaced by the fire.
Knotts Island responders could not immediately be reached by phone this morning.
