THE INDEPENDENT NEWS

CREEDS — The annual show and sale for Virginia Beach 4-H Livestock Club was held on Thursday, June 2, and Friday, June 3, at the Creeds Ruritan Community Complex, raising funds for the youth-development program that aims to build civic-mindedness.

The event included visits by state Del. Barry Knight, R- 81st District, and Virginia Beach City Manager Dave Hansen. The latter quizzed the crowd on well-known 4-H alumni, such as actor Julia Roberts, whose brother, Eric Roberts, filmed a movie in southern Virginia Beach this past year.

Dawson Cox, 13, of Red Mill said he likes the work and responsibility that goes into raising an animal through 4-H. And he said he likes the animals he raises, too.

“This is a really good hog,” he said. “I just like how she responds really well.”

Logan Brickhouse, 17, of Ocean Lakes, said she was in her sixth year of 4-H.

She had this to add about her participation in the club:

“It makes me grow as a person.”

Grace Schratwieser, 10, works with her hog during the auction, even employing a trick of the trade — marshmallows. She said she likes the responsibility of 4-H. “I like how I get to meet new people,” she said, adding that she hopes to raise a steer next year.
