Commission reviewing event homes, Airbnb to tour Sandbridge on Thursday, host Q&A with public

COURTHOUSE — The Beaches and Waterways Advisory Commission will meet on Thursday, May 19, at 3 p.m. in Sandbridge to tour the community before holding a question and answer session at 3:45 p.m.

The city council recently asked the commission to look into issues involving event home rentals, which have become a source of contention for some in Sandbridge.

As The Independent News reported in its most recent print edition, the meeting was to have included a tour of two of the event homes, mansions that sometimes are rented out for events such as weddings.

That fell through, though.

However, the Commission will still meet in the parking lot of Sandbridge Community Chapel United Methodist Church at 3 p.m. for the tour, then return at about 3:45 p.m. to the church, which is located at 3041 Sandpiper Road.

The commission held its first meeting on the issue this past week. It also is reviewing the issue of Airbnb rentals in the city.

There were hundreds of Airbnb rentals available in Virginia Beach as of Monday, May 16, including a number of rentals in Sandbridge. Some of the rentals offered daily rates at the Airbnb site.
