From the Editor: Seeking Strawberry Festival memories, poetry

BY JOHN-HENRY DOUCETTE

PUNGO — The issue published just before Pungo Strawberry Festival is a special one for The Independent News

This year, that’s the May 27 edition, and I’m hoping to gather some memories of the festival to publish for the paper we hand out that weekend.

I hope you will please consider writing down a memory of the festival and sending it to me via jhd@princessanneindy.com or our snail mail address, P.O. Box 7064, Virginia Beach, 23457.

Please include your name, which neighborhood your live in, and a way for me to contact you. I won’t publish the last bit.

I’m also looking for images of the festival, even personal photos, you might want to share.

You don’t have to be from Pungo.

In the past year, The Independent News has been fortunate enough to publish original poetry by Rick Hite and Noah Renn and, most recently, republish an exceptional poem by Luisa Igloria. I’d like to do some more of this this year, but we don’t only publish the work of established writers.

This a community newspaper that values the power of writing, and we want to publish community voices in print and online at princessanneindy.com whenever we can.

We have three editions in April, which is National Poetry Month, due to the way our two-week production schedule falls, and I hope to have original, local poems in each issue.

Please email poems for consideration to jhd@princessanneindy.com. Please send them in a Word file, if possible, or within the email itself.

It doesn’t pay much, but it does pay — $25 per published poem. Please send only your own original work, not Disney lyrics, which is so specific there must be a reason it was the first example that came to me.

Thanks for reading.
