PUNGO — At one point during a recent holiday gathering at the Pungo Sports Bar & Grill, members of the Back Bay chapter of Delta Waterfowl practiced duck calls in the kitchen, even out in the bar near a serious buffet and a table of prizes up for auction.

It was meant to help the chapter raise funds, and it also raised support for a the establishment’s “downtown” neighbor, Pungo Veterinary Clinic.

Kelsey Powers of Knotts Island, N.C., the bar manager, said donations for the shelter might go to help buy supplies for animals in its care.

“The hunters are helping raise money for next door,” said Shane Cunningham, owner of Pungo Sports Bar & Grill and a resident of the Oceanfront. “Since I opened the place up, I realized how much of a community Pungo is.”

Ultimately, about $650 was raised for the clinic.

Steve Conrad of the Delta Waterfowl chapter said the organization supports conservation and involving youth in the outdoors and hunting.

“We’re into increasing duck numbers. … It’s a heritage thing,” he said.

Local businesses Pungo Offroad, Pungo Board House and WRV contributed to the effort, Cunningham said.
