BACK BAY – The winners of Back Bay Journal’s third annual Flora and Fauna Photography Contest were announced in the June issue of the local publiation, which serves southeastern Virginia Beach and Knotts Island, N.C.

The journal’s contest celebrates the natural beauty of the Back Bay area, as well as the skill and artistry of local photographers.

In the fauna category, Pam Monahan won for a striking image of an egret amid a snowy landscape and icy water. Bill Niven won in the flora category with an image of a tree amid a wide, green field and under a blue sky and a few clouds.

The contest was judged by G. Michael Brown, a Kings Grant resident and owner of GMB Photography.

Back Bay Journal does a nice job of trying to highlight the beauty of Pungo and Creeds and that whole area of Virginia Beach,” Brown said in a telephone interview on Tuesday, June 23.

He enjoys taking photographs here, as well.

“It’s one of my favorite places to shoot,” Brown said. “You never know what you’ll find.”
